Monster Hunter World Breaks 100K Concurrency Mark For The First Time In Three Years
Monster Hunter World has seen a significant surge in interest over the past few weeks that propelled its concurrent player numbers over the 100,000 mark on Steam for the first time in three years. Player numbers peaked at 113,875 players early on Christmas Day, roughly 10,000 players shy of the 123,163 concurrent players that it logged with the release of its final game update in October 2020.
The game’s sudden boost in popularity is largely attributed to Capcom’s ongoing #ReturntoWorld campaign. Although, the fact that Monster Hunter World is currently being offered at 67% off (it’s lowest price point since it’s launch) might have more to do with it. The campaign should also help build hype up for the next game in the long-running series, Monster Hunter Wilds.
Monster Hunter Worlds ushered in a new era as the first Monster Hunter game to launch on PC. It was also the first game in the series to feature an open-world map, rather than the loading-screen-segmented maps of the previous games. Those alone helped cement its place as one of the best-selling games in the series, having generated over a third of all franchise sales as of May 2020.
