Sea Of Thieves Has Banned Thousands Of Cheaters And Toxic Players In The Past Year

Thousands of Sea of Thieves players have been made to walk the plank as Rare continues to crack down on cheaters in the pirate MMORPG. According to the studio’s latest dev blog, they’ve banned over nearly 20,000 s in the past year.

“Your reports alone have resulted in the termination of over 7,000 s in the last 12 months, with nearly 5,000 bans in the last six months of players confirmed to be cheating in-game,” the studio reported. “Further to this, our security team have issued permanent bans to an additional 8,000 s in the last 12 months as a result of internal cheat detection and anti-tampering measures. The ability to grant items to a player’s without the prerequisites to do so – this also resulted in the termination of 4,500 s that were detected to be using this exploit.”

The majority of the bans were meted out to players caught using speed hacks and exploits, including one that allowed players to magically transport water from the hull of their ship into another ship. We get that some players deserve having their ships flooded and sunk to the bottom of the ocean, but that’s still against the rules.

“Rare has a zero-tolerance approach to any form of in-game hacking or cheating, and any transgression can result in permanent enforcement action,” warns the team.

The bans don’t stop there though, as Rare reports that they’ve banned an additional 8,500 s for toxicity, including but not limited to, hate speech and inappropriate ship names.
