Dune: Awakening Launches on Steam, Console Versions Coming in 2026

Dune: Awakening, the latest large-scale multiplayer survival game from Funcom, is now available officially launched on Steam. The game was available since June 5th for anyone who purchased a Deluxe version of the game ($69.99 vs the $49.99 standard price).

Set in the iconic universe of Frank Herbert’s Dune, the game invites players to navigate the hazardous deserts of Arrakis while developing both personal and political power. This release marks one of the most ambitious attempts yet to merge survival mechanics with MMO-style persistent elements.

PC players are the first to experience the game, but Funcom has confirmed that versions for PlayStation and Xbox are in the works, with a console launch targeted for 2026. This staggered rollout follows a week-long early access period for Deluxe and Ultimate Edition buyers, during which the game saw a peak of over 117,000 concurrent players on Steam. Since launching today the game's concurrent number has jumped to over 130,000.

The game is currently sitting at an 87% rating, reflecting a strong initial reception from the community.

  • Business Model: One-time purchase with optional DLC; no subscriptions or microtransactions

Dune: Awakening stands out in the survival genre not just for its source material but also for its scale, with hundreds of players sharing the same persistent universe. The game draws inspiration from both classic MMOs and recent survival sandboxes, aiming to appeal to fans of both genres. Funcom, known for its experience with online worlds such as Conan Exiles, is betting big on Dune’s enduring popularity and the current trend toward expansive, player-driven multiplayer experiences.

While this is not a typical MMO despite having some MMO elements, fans of Dune as well as those interested in a narrative driven sandbox survival game will find a lot to like here.
