Funcom was founded by Gaute Godager in 1993 primarily as a video game developer. Over the past few years, they have been delving deeper into publishing with great success. They previously sold physical copies of their products, but switched to an entirely digital distribution model in 2007. Funcom is currently one of the leading European independent game developers and publishers. They are also notable for being the first Norwegian game developer to be on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Their rapid growth led to the creation of a development studio in Montreal, Canada in 2009. However, they are not a company without their negatives. Godager left the company in 2008, citing dissatisfaction with the direction of Age of Conan. Funcom also reported record layoffs of half the company in 2012 due to poor sales and reported possible layoffs for their Montreal branch in 2013.
