The Weekly Raid: What Was Your Favorite Announcement At Blizzcon 2017?
Blizzcon 2017 was held on November 3rd and 4th and this year saw several major announcements. Major Updates for World of Warcraft were revealed. There were plenty of surprises, and several disappointments.
Among the biggest surprises for us was the revelation that Blizzard has indeed been working on a Classic World of Warcraft server that would emulate the early days of the fantasy MMORPG, before any expansions were released. A new expansion raising the level cap to 120 was also announced, so there's plenty for WoW fans to look forward to in 2018.
Another shocker was the absence of the Diablo franchise. Diablo had a minimal presense at the convention, and no big announcements or updates were made for the action RPG. Fans were expecting some info on either Diablo 4 or a potential Diablo 2 Remastered edition. I'm sure a lot Diablo fans left Blizzcon feeling a deflated.
StarCraft 2 going free to play was perhaps the best news for me personally. While a free version is already available, it does not allow ranked ladder play. The new free to play version will not only include ladder play, but will even give access to the original Wings of Liberty campaign. Players will have to purchase the game to access the Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void campaigns. Its worth stressing that free players will get access to the same ladder as paying Legacy of the Void players and thus get to enjoy the new units introduced through the years.
Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm both received some love. A new expansion for Hearthstone, titled Kobolds & Catacombs is in the works and HotS players have two new heroes, Hanzo and Alexstrasza.
