Wurm Online Announces Rebranding And New In-Game Cash Shop
Major changes are on the horizon for Wurm Online as the long-running MMORPG prepares to undergo a rebranding this summer. Game Chest Group CEO revealed that they’ve been working to give the fantasy sandbox a “fresh, vibrant, and memorable identity” and will be unveiling the fruits of their labor at the end of June, complete with a new website and changes to the business model.
For those unfamiliar with Game Chest Group, the company apparently acquired Code Club back in 2019 and Wurm Online along with it. The Swedish company’s portfolio includes a diverse range of video game websites and services, from subscription and lootbox services, to browser game portals and eSports event tools.
As part of the game's new direction, Wurm Online will be expanding its business model to include an in-game shop. This addition aims to provide players with a convenient platform to make in-game purchases, enhancing their gaming experience. Subsequently, trader NPCs will be forcibly retired by July 17th. You’ll still be able to find them in their usual spots but they’ll no longer be functional.
In conjunction with the rebranding efforts, Wurm Online dev team will be undergoing organizational changes, including the appointment of a new product manager and head game master.
In a recent investor press release, Game Chest Group revealed that Wurm Online had accrued a whopping 10 million SEK in sales (approximately $935,000 US) since its Steam port in July 2020. The company also said that the addition of a cash shop will provide them with a new sales channel that will allow players to make real-time purchases and enjoy a wider range of products and offers. The in-game shop is expected to go live during the month of June, coinciding with the game's rebranding announcement.
