Warhammer Online’s Carrie Gouskos Talks About The Challenges Of Making Wrath Of Heroes
Bungie executive producer Carrie Gouskos recently took to Warhammer Online during her time at Mythic Entertainment.
As Gouskos explains, when she took over Warhammer Online, the team had already shrunk significantly, and the company wasn't receiving enough funding to create big expansions. She was then tasked with creating a new game in nine months using only recycled resources from Warhammer Online, which would turn out to be a MOBA game. The challenge was significant, as DOTA and League of Legends were already hugely popular, and the team had a tight deadline.
Despite the hard work and dedication from the team, Wrath of Heroes never took off, and Gouskos its that maybe they didn't give themselves enough time, money, or people to achieve more success. However, she feels proud of what they accomplished, and the experience taught her a lot about the industry and the players' expectations.
Gouskos also vented about how players blamed her for killing Warhammer Online to fund a “pet” game, which was far from the truth. She was trying to save jobs and create a game that people would love. Unfortunately, the players didn't respond positively, and Wrath of Heroes never took off. Despite the disappointment, Gouskos remains proud of what her team achieved in such a short time frame.
Creating a game is always a challenging task, but the pressure is even more intense when you have limited resources and a tight deadline. While Wrath of Heroes may not have been a massive success, it's a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team who worked tirelessly to create something out of limited resources.
When I took over Warhammer Online the team had already shrunk a lot. We tried to be creative but players wanted big expansions. And we weren’t getting the $ to do it.
So I was asked to take some devs and make a new game, out of WAR assets and engine, and do it in nine months. 🧵
