Elite Dangerous Developer Frontier Developments Working On "Enduring Movie Franchise"
Frontier Developments reported to the London Stock Exchange today that it is working on a new game that will be part of an "enduring movie franchise of global renown." While no other details have been given yet, we will learn more later in 2017.
Frontier Developments Chief Executive David Braben had the following to say about the announcement.
The third franchise is an important next step in our growth. We have chosen to license this particular IP to work with as our third franchise, because we believe we can create something very special. It is creatively stimulating, already has a high worldwide profile, and is a perfect match for our expertise.
The announcement is also trying to off the as-yet unnamed title as Frontier's third game, which is patently untrue. You can find a list of all games that they have had a hand in developing on the company's Wikipedia page, but even a quick Google search will find the 2013 Zoo Tycoon reboot listed on their official website.
Following the announcement, Frontier Developments shares rose 3.2% to "286.40 pence."
While Frontier Developments did create Elite Dangerous, which is an MMO, I sincerely doubt that the new title will be an MMO. The new title being part of an "enduring movie franchise of global renown" means that the company is unlikely to take the risks involved in the creation of a new MMO, especially when it is not traditionally an MMO company and already has an MMO in active development.
That being said, we can still enjoy a good guessing game. My bet is on Harry Potter.
