Paladins Cutting Down On Customization To Become More MOBA-Centric

“Give us more characters,” was the response of the gaming community when Team Fortress 2/Global Agenda type of game with fewer characters but more potential for customization and variation using the game’s card system.

Using the card system players are able to create their own skill trees to fit their own playstyles, often resulting in weird and wacky builds that don’t necessarily fit the character’s intended identity or role. “The element of understanding the enemy and their capabilities is important to flag up here,” said Erez in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun. In addition, the influence of MOBAs like Overwatch had a considerable effect on what the gaming community expected of the game. “People don’t seem to appreciate the variation on a character as much as they do having a new character that does things that particular way”, Erez says.

Based on the that Hi-Rez received from the testing phase along with survey results, the developers have decided to make the game more MOBA-like and limit the amount of customization possible through the card system. This design shift should result in more consistent playing styles and roles for each character.
