Overwatch 2 Devs Dive Into The New Features Coming In August’s Invasion Update
The Invasion update. During the developer stream, the team highlighted several new features, including PvE story missions, event missions, hero mastery mode, character progression updates, and the Flashpoint PvP mode.
Despite Blizzard’s decision to scrap individual hero missions, players will still get at least part of the promised PvE content in the form of PvE Story Missions that are designed to advance the Overwatch narrative. Players will also be able to take on repeatable content in Event Missions that will feature familiar enemies in new encounters, ensuring a fresh experience each time players engage with them.
The team also talked up the new Hero Mastery Mode which are designed to help players learn about each hero’s playstyle, strategies, and techniques while they try to complete various challenges. Five heroes will be unlocked throughout Season 6 with a scoring leaderboard available for competitive players to showcase their skills.
Character progression will also be getting a major update that will allow players to earn XP for actions performed by individual heroes. This includes character-specific actions like damage mitigated and healing done, as well as general actions such as melee kills, total damage done, and time played. Each category has no XP cap, and players will be rewarded with cosmetic name cards as they level up.
Lastly, Blizzard showcased the Flashpoint PvP mode with emphasis on the unique maps designed for this mode. The Flashpoint maps are larger than standard maps and feature parallel paths for opposing teams. This strategic element opens up possibilities for early team fights, defensive postures, and strategic maneuvering of enemy teams. The team further dove into the development process of the Flashpoint mode, providing an in-depth look at the two maps created specifically for this mode.
With the Invasion update set to launch on August 10th, Overwatch 2 players can look forward to an array of exciting additions that will enhance both their PvE and PvP experiences.
