Niantic Brings Back The Tamagotchi As A New Mobile AR Game Called Peridot

Niantic has announced a new augmented reality MMO that will allow players to raise, train, and breed unique creatures right on their mobile devices. No, you’re not experiencing Pokemon Go déjà vu. It’s a new game called Peridot which, from the looks of it, bears more resemblance to the Tamagotchi’s of the 90s than to the mobile Pokemon game.

“After thousands of years of slumber, Peridots (or Dots for short) are waking to a world vastly different from the one in which they used to roam, and they’ll need our help to protect them from extinction.”

The core gameplay loop revolves around caring for, playing with, and training your Peridot from birth to adulthood. Eventually, you’ll be able to breed your Peridot to acquire a new one with its unique characteristics and quiriks.

“Each Peridot is completely unique. Just like humans, they are all different in various ways – they can differ in their visual appearance, their personality traits, their likes and dislikes, and their abilities. Each Peridot has its own unique DNA. The breeding system, which is patterned after the way DNA works in real life, blends the best of hand-created assets and procedural generation, creating a stunning array of unique creatures.”

One of the key features to drive players to explore their surroundings and interact with other players is the Desire System. Peridots will regularly have desires that will need your help to fulfill for them to grow such as going for a walk, visiting a nearby point-of-interest, or eating a blue tomato.

Soft-launch beta testing starts sometime this month in selected regions on both Android and iOS devices. More information can be found on the Peridot official site.
