Microsoft Boss Says Blocking Of Activision-Blizzard Merger Is Its ‘Darkest Day’ In The UK

In a surprising move, Microsoft's plans to acquire Activision-Blizzard have been blocked by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority. After this setback, Microsoft released a statement that was equal parts vague and melodramatic, hinting at a reconsideration of their position in the UK and lamenting the state of innovation in the country.

“This decision, I have to say, is probably the darkest day in our four decades in Britain,” Microsoft Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith says in a video on BBC. “It does more to shake our confidence in the future of the opportunity to grow a technology business in Britain than we’ve ever confronted before.”

On the other hand, the CMA has made it clear that their main goal is to foster an environment of healthy competition and innovation, where multiple companies can flourish and grow.

Some industry analysts believe that Microsoft was simply not paying attention to the warning signs and mishandled the situation. In hindsight, it seems that Microsoft had been ignoring the red flags for months, even as the regulators' concerns grew louder.

Perhaps this will serve as a lesson to Microsoft and other tech giants that they can't always get their way. At the end of the day, it's important to prioritize the values of competition, innovation, and fairness above all else.
