Final Stand: Ragnarok Prepares For Next Phase of Early Access

The recently renamed studio Unchained Entertainment has brought their first title Final Stand: Ragnarok closer to full release. While originally published on Steam back in 2021 for $19.99, the game was in an early alpha phase that only garnered about 37 peak concurrent players.

After a recent investment round, Unchained Entertainment is finally in a position to push out the latest build of Final Stand: Ragnarok and to invest more resources into finishing the project. A major Early Access update is scheduled for March 14, 2024 so keep and eye on the Steam page.

The developers gave the media an opportunity to try the major update a week prior to its release. The game is a co-op survival game perhaps best compared to Fortnite's original 'Save the World' mode. A group of up to 10 players select from a range of mythological characters and defend against hordes of enemies which progressively get stronger and more numerous. If what we were shown is what will be available this Thursday, the game is still too early in development and too light on content to recommend to a general audience.

Reading between the lines, it seems more plausible that Final Stand: Ragnarok is a stand-in tech demo for the studio's Unchained Engine which is being used to develop MMORPGs early development, studio head Mark Jacobs decided to build an in house engine capable of ing a large number of concurrent players in single area or region.

After a decade roaming the desert, Jacobs claims to have found the way forward. With additional funding from venture capital firm A16Z Games and armed with the new engine, Camelot Unchained is now scheduled for release in late 2025. While that date may seem ambitious to those of us who have been following the saga for over a decade, some sort of publicly playable beta is certainly feasible.
