Abyss of Dungeons Launches Fourth Season With New Inferno Difficulty and Major Updates

Abyss of Dungeons, the mobile dungeon-crawling RPG formerly known as Dark and Darker Mobile, has rolled out its fourth pre-season update, bringing a new layer of challenge and a series of quality-of-life improvements for players in Canada and the U.S. The update, v0.13, is available starting June 11 and runs through August 8, offering both new and returning players a range of fresh content and incentives.

The game, which blends elements of classic RPG dungeon crawling with extraction mechanics, has steadily built a following since launch. The game's name and branding was likely changed after the resolution of Nexon's copyright and trade secrets lawsuit in South Korea, where both Krafton and Nexon (as well as Dark & Darker's developer Ironmace) are based.

The latest update, Pre-season #4, continues the trend of expanding content while attempting to strike a balance between hardcore and casual play styles. Returning players keep their currencies and gear from the previous season, while new systems are designed to help onboard newcomers.

  • Inferno Difficulty in The Forgotten Castle: The new Inferno level, previously accessible only through a portal from Hell difficulty, is now selectable directly. This setting introduces tougher monsters and rare loot, ramping up the endgame challenge.
  • Casual Mode: A PvE-only mode that disables player-versus-player combat, offering a less stressful way to explore dungeons at the cost of slightly reduced rewards.
  • Randomized Dungeon Layouts: For Nightmare and Hell difficulties, dungeon layouts now change with each run, requiring players to adapt strategies on the fly.
  • Onboarding Buffs: New and returning players receive a special 7-day buff that protects their equipped gear from loss if they fail to escape in Normal, Hard, and Nightmare modes.
  • Competitive Progression: Weekly Leagues, Mission Road challenges, and Hot Time events introduce new incentives and tiered rewards for active players.
  • Death Recap Feature: Players can now see detailed information about how they died, including which skills and weapons were used against them.
  • Team Communication Tools: Quick markers allow players to mark loot and share positions with teammates more efficiently.
  • Marketplace and UI Improvements: Updated interface with better search filters, tooltips, and navigation for smoother trading and inventory management.
  • Combat and Performance Updates: Skill reworks, new high-efficiency items, revamped training grounds, and broad optimizations for better performance on various devices.

Created by Krafton, Abyss of Dungeons is part of a growing trend of mobile RPGs incorporating extraction and high-risk, high-reward systems. These updates reflect ongoing community and a push to make the game more accessible to newcomers while still challenging experienced players. The game continues to evolve each season, with new content and features aimed at keeping the player base engaged.
